Glenn Doman, director of the Institute for the Realization of Human Abilities, believes that reading for a child is an important skill that he must acquire, such as speaking and walking.

Therefore, it is necessary to start at an early age. And Glenn Doman's method of teaching children to read is essentially a set of home remedial programs designed to help children with special needs to develop and advance their mental state.

But it is currently applied to enhance the intelligence and capabilities of healthy children. It aims to develop and enhance human intelligence by encouraging children to acquire primary skills such as reading, writing and arithmetic.

the beginning

It started in 1955, when physicist Glenn Doman worked at a rehabilitation center in Philadelphia, USA.

Glenn had started developing special rehabilitation programs for adults with strokes.

It was found that the physical therapy programs taught by the university were not sufficient to improve the condition of patients because they focused on the symptoms rather than on the original problem of brain damage.

His work has since expanded to include children with special needs because they in turn have neurological problems that lead to learning difficulties and delayed speech and speech.

And while his method was working satisfactorily with patients at his medical center, he noticed that families who used this method with their children at home were very successful as well.

So he started teaching families the basics of the growth and development of the mind, and developed his program from a model for a therapeutic program to a model for home therapy, then into a method for teaching children to read at an early age.

What is the method of Glenn Doman?

It is a method that relies on the child's visual memory, as the education-based uses large cards of cardboard and carefully selects some words or names for things in the child's vicinity.

It depends on the speed in displaying cards, while repeating a set of words many times throughout the day, then over several days so that the child can recognize the shape of the word and then pronounce it after that.

Preparing the child to learn

Before starting, it is necessary to prepare the child, talk to him, make sure he wants to start and motivate him, and create an atmosphere of fun in a quiet place away from the distractions.

The child must not feel compelled to do so, but rather it is a kind of play and entertainment, and often the children will be enthusiastic because at a young age they have a craving for knowledge and a curiosity for all that is new.

Large cards of cardboard must be used, and words should preferably be large and bright red like to grab the child's attention.

Choose words from his own world, as vocabulary from his family, friends, favorite foods and animals and the things he loves. Prepare cards covering at least a month at the beginning of education.

The five stages

The program consists of five phases or steps, and it must not move from one stage to another before the current stage pays off.

Also, the skills of the new stage must be introduced gradually and integrated with the previous stage.

The first stage:

Start with a group of ten words, read them quickly and do not ask the child to repeat them, and pause before the child wants you to stop, that means he is bored.

Each group of cards must be repeated three times a day for a short period of time, not exceeding a few minutes.

After a while, you will notice that the child will need a smaller number of times to display the cards in order to recognize the words.

In the end, the child will need to see the card once to get to know the word on the card. It is a good idea to add new words every day and not repeat the old ones 15 times.

The second stage:

It is the teaching of double words, and it consists of two words used in the first stage.

It is preferred that you display a card or two of the double words in addition to the new single words.

The third stage:

The child begins to learn to read short sentences such as (drinking the milk father) and so on until we reach the fourth stage.

The fourth stage:

They are long sentences that contain adjectives and pronouns, and in the same previous method of displaying cards quickly.

The fifth stage:

The child is now ready to read books, and if the child is less than three years old, it is preferable for the person in charge of education to make the book himself by cutting certain large-sized pictures from several other books.

Consider the use of a small number of words of interest to the child and that the words be displayed on one of the pages and on the opposite page the pictures.

Suitable age for the child

The strange thing about the Glenn Doman program is that it is possible to start teaching children from the age of 18 months, and even prefers to start teaching children to read as soon as it reaches this age and start with simple words.

Preferably not later than four years because the younger the child the more enthusiastic.

The duration of the program is large and takes months and depends on the extent of behavior and behaviors, coherence and consistency, so start the program slowly and establish a good program before starting adding other words.

Warning of the program

There are a bunch of things that you should avoid when starting the tutorial, among them:

Never ever test the child, reading should be like the game where the child always wins, and you must receive his answer, no matter how big of a smile, and do not tell him that his answer is wrong.

For example, if you want him to refer to the word my father and refer to my mother, then clap for him and say "True, I chose the word my mother, well done." The principle of correct and wrong answer will make it frustrating.

Also, the session should be fast so that the child does not get bored, and do not pressure him to learn a certain thing or be tense, but leave him for another time that the child is ready to absorb.

Answer all his questions and make the session enjoyable, creative and all that he cares about in his daily life.
